Edwina White's delicate drawings on found vintage papers of menus and books, etc. are often enhanced with collage and text and present multiple narratives. Her whimsical escapades are built from memory and injected with gentle, often wry humor. Her subjects are distinctive in character, melding classical elements of expression and detail with a raw modern sensibility.
Born in Sydney, Australia, Edwina White graduated in Visual Communications, following a spell at Brighton University, England. Her drawings, installations and animations have been exhibited in the United States, Australia and the UK.
The Center for Contemporary Arts [CCA] will hold a small reception / screening to showcase Edwina White's latest work at 6pm Thursday, March 5. White will present the work created during her residency—a stop motion animated short, "The Way the Wind Blows". The handpainted and charmingly absurd characters that feature in the film will also be on view in the studio.

EXECUTIVE UPDATE
Mapping knowledge and the issues that drive us helps shape our experiences, and leads us to new ways of seeing in the world. CCA is steering more and more programming toward environmental and social justice issues, as well as collaborations in science and technology.
We are working along side New Energy Economy, teaching media empowerment to indigenous youth, to foster positive changes within both the sociological and environmental arenas. Our upcoming African Effect Film Festival presents political and critical cinema to showcase the broad spectrum of creative works coming from the continent, particularly those that reinforce positive images and help to destroy negative stereotypes. We believe film and art can lead to better understanding and foster communication between peoples of diverse cultures, races, and lifestyles, while at the same time, serve as a vehicle to initiate dialogue on the important issues of our times.
Vernon Reid’s Artificial Afrika is installed in our Moving Image Lab through February, while Edwina White joins us as Artist in Residency for the month also.

We initiated the African Effect festival in 2003 to celebrate the impact of African cultures. This year's festival asks a still more pressing question: What lessons can we learn from Africa’s current transformation? While many of us are familiar with Nelson Mandela's bridge-building work in South Africa, other inspiring, courageous and instructive peaceful revolutions also deserve our attention. In Liberia, women joined together to challenge a vicious dictatorship, and then assumed leadership of their country. In Rwanda, survivors and perpetrators of a hellish genocide are now seeking ways to live together and heal deep psychic wounds. We'll show films and present discussions on these historic moments. We'll also spotlight Mumia Abu Jamal's steadfast commitment to social justice, celebrate Youssou Ndour's transcendent choice of faith above politics, dirty our hands with Malian mud, travel to Louisiana for a tale of redemption and discover American hip-hop's influence on urban youth worldwide. And we'll again showcase Ousmane Sembene, Africa's leading cultural figure of the last half of the 20th century, whose entire career was dedicated to creating what he described as “liberating and galvanizing stories for Africa.”
To highlight the relevance these stories have to our everyday lives, three special guests will host this year's festival. Samba Gadjigo, a treasured co-curator of this event for the past three years, is the world’s authority on Sembene, and will return to introduce two classics by his countryman from Senegal. Atema Eclai, a Kenyan native and director of programs at the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, is one of the world’s leading human rights and mediation experts. And Liberia's Bill Saa is a peace-builder and co-director of the internationally acclaimed NGO Everyday Gandhis. While the films themselves are inspiring, the presence of our guests, who demonstrate their progressive ideals through action, will resonate deeply during this time of crisis, transition and new visions.

Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh (TRAFFIC, OCEAN'S ELEVEN, ERIN BROKOVICH) tackles one of the 20th century's most compelling heroes in this riveting, two-film biography. It begins November 26, 1956 as Fidel Castro leads a band of 80 rebels, including the Argentine physician Che Guevara (Oscar winner Benicio del Toro), to Cuba. Fueled only by determination, the group engages in swift, bloody battle to free the Cuban people from the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. A hero to many, the controversial Che disappears at the height of his fame and power, entering South America incognito, recruiting another band of guerilla fighters and beginning a mission in the harsh Bolivian jungles to spark revolution throughout Latin America.

Artificial Afrika is a an animated new media project to be shown in our moving image lab. This current work by Vernon Reid will be shown in coordination with CCA’s African Effect Film Festival.
Vernon Reid (Visual Artist, Composer, guitarist) was a visual artist before becoming a musician. Mr. Reid is probably best known for the years he spent leading the rock group Living Colour, founded in circa 1985 in NYC. He has collaborated with artists ranging from Mick Jagger and Public Enemy to Carlos Santana. He has produced records by the great African singer Salif Keita which was nominated for a Grammy in 2000 and for James Blood Ulmer, who was nominated for a Grammy in 2002. He has worked with numerous other artists/albums, and directed music performance projects at BAM and MassMoca. His photography and installations have been shown in galleries in the United States and Europe.

CHANGE is inspired by the changes that occur everyday: the development in our community, revolutions in government and politics, and transformations in the environment. In addition to the juried portion of the show, the exhibition includes ten 4 x 8 foot panels that have infiltrated the Santa Fe community. A broad cross-section of participants shares their views on the concept of change through painting, drawing, collage, and text. Some of the panel locations include Desert Academy, Monte del Sol High School, the Santa Fe Community College, Santa Fe Youth Shelters and Family Services, and Warehouse 21. Involving the community is an essential component of the exhibition and a blank panel will be available so visitors to the exhibition can participate as well.

The Ancestral Groan Liberation Orchestra is a collective of musicians who gather to explore and instigate unorthodox methods of music making, which include graphic and text scores by composers such as Christian Wolff, John Cage, and John Zorn; and compositions and improvisational/theatrical systems prepared by the collective members.
On January 30 and 31 the Orchestra will perform two nights of compositions by Philip Mantione, Martin Back, Christian Wolff, John Cage, John Zorn, David Dunn and more in order to raise money for a new P.A. system for CCA.
